Before changing the creative, check five things in order
When an ad is running, money is being spent, and leads aren't showing up (or barely are), the first instinct is to swap the photo or the copy. That often doesn't help, because the cause usually sits in one of the steps before or after the creative, not the creative itself. Here's a check order that goes from the cheapest fix to the most expensive one, instead of guessing.
Step 1: where does the click actually land
This is the first thing to check, and it's where the problem usually lives. If the ad just points to an Instagram profile or opens a DM with no ready reply flow behind it, the budget buys reach, not leads, the person has to figure out what to say themselves and then wait for a reply, and most of the interest evaporates right there. Meta has no direct path from "ad click" to "Telegram bot opens," Telegram isn't on the list of supported messaging destinations for ad clicks, so if bookings happen there, the ad needs to send people to a website with a clear button into the bot, not try to open the bot directly.
What to check: open the ad like an ordinary person would and walk the whole path to booking yourself, how many steps, what happens right after the click, does anything reply instantly or is there silence.
Step 2: look at CTR and cost per result together, not separately
The dashboard shows two key numbers for diagnosis: CTR (click-through rate) and cost per result (cost per lead/message). The combination points to different causes:
- CTR is fine, cost per lead is high: the ad grabs attention, but the funnel after the click loses people. The fix isn't the creative, it's the landing page, reply speed, or the booking form itself.
- CTR is low, cost per lead is high: the problem is the ad itself or the audience, the message doesn't land or it's shown to the wrong people. This is where changing copy and visuals first, geography and interests second, actually makes sense.
- CTR is low but leads still come in at a reasonable price: rare but fine: the ad isn't the most eye-catching, but it's reaching exactly the right audience.
Step 3: check volume and how long it's been running
One day of results says nothing, the algorithm needs time to learn. Meta's official recommendation for local businesses running a "Messages" objective is a minimum of 7 days at $10-20 a day, with no changes to the campaign during that window. If the budget sits at the technical minimum (around $1 a day for impressions, $5 for clicks/conversions), the algorithm often doesn't get enough data even in a week, that's worth checking separately from the creative.
Step 4: compare the cost per lead against your real ceiling
Before deciding "too expensive" or "fine," there needs to be a number to compare against, your own acceptable cost per lead, calculated from margin and the conversion rate into a paid visit (the formula is in a separate guide in this series). Comparing against foreign benchmarks (average lead cost in the US swings several times over by niche) doesn't fit the Georgian market, competition for advertisers and buying power differ here.
Step 5: if it really is the account after all
If the click destination is correct, the numbers have been running for over a week, and the volume is enough, but the result is still above the ceiling, the cause really is the ad or the audience, and that's when changing the copy, visuals or targeting makes sense, not before.
Common mistakes, in short
- Changing the creative on day one without checking where the click even lands.
- Judging by a single day of delivery instead of a week.
- Comparing your cost per lead to a vague internet "average" instead of your own margin.
- The ad technically points straight to Telegram, and the click simply doesn't work as intended.
Diagnostic checklist
- [ ] Checked where the click actually lands, and walked the booking path yourself
- [ ] CTR and cost per result reviewed together, not separately
- [ ] The campaign ran at least 5-7 days with no changes
- [ ] Your own acceptable cost-per-lead ceiling is calculated
- [ ] The creative only changes after checking the first four points, not instead of it
