How to set up and complete a Google Maps business profile

Why this is the first thing worth fixing

When someone searches "salon near me" or "clinic in my area," they almost always pick from the map cards, not from a website. Ranking there comes down to three things: relevance (does the profile match the search), distance, and prominence (how complete the profile is, reviews, activity). If the profile is missing or half-filled, a salon simply cannot appear in the top three, no matter how good the site or the ad budget.

Step 1: claim the business profile

Go to google.com/business and click "Manage now." If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates one on its own from third-party data or reviews), choose "Claim this business" instead of creating a new one, duplicate listings for the same address only hurt visibility.

What to click: enter the exact company name, address (or service area, if it's appointment-only with no walk-in office), and phone number.

Step 2: verify the profile

Google needs to confirm the business is real. Verification methods usually include a phone call, SMS, email, or a postcard with a code, which one is available depends on the business type and address. Until the profile is verified, some features (replying to reviews, posting updates) are not available.

Common mistake: setting up the profile and forgetting about it before verification finishes, a postcard code can take a week to arrive, and without it the profile simply will not show up in live search.

Step 3: pick the category precisely

This is one of the strongest ranking signals, stronger than most owners assume. "Beauty salon" and "barbershop" are different categories with different sets of extra fields, and picking a generic category instead of a precise one lowers relevance for specific searches (a men's haircut search behaves differently from a manicure search). Extra categories can be added if the business mixes services, but the primary one should be as precise as possible.

Step 4: fill the profile out completely

Business hours (and separately, holiday hours if they differ), photos of the interior and of finished work, a company description, services with prices or a price range, a link to the site and to the Telegram booking bot if there is one. Empty fields are not a neutral minus, Google treats each one as a gap in information when comparing against a competitor whose profile is fully filled in.

Common mistake: the name, address and phone in the Google profile don't match the site and other directories letter for letter, mismatched data (an NAP inconsistency) visibly lowers the algorithm's trust in the profile.

Step 5: turn reviews into an ongoing process

A direct link to the review form is available right inside the profile (the "Share profile" button / a short review link) and can be sent to the client right after the visit, not a month later while the impression is still fresh. A steady stream of new reviews matters more than a one-time spike, a profile getting one review a month consistently reads better to the algorithm than one that gets twenty in a day and then goes silent.

How to actually reply to reviews, good and bad, is its own guide in this same series.

Common mistakes, in short

  • A second profile created instead of claiming the existing one.
  • The category is too generic ("beauty services" instead of "barbershop").
  • Name/address/phone differ from the version on the website.
  • Photos and hours haven't been updated in months.
  • Reviews aren't requested systematically, only "when someone remembers."
